Revenue math
How Much Revenue Are You Losing to Abandoned Carts?
Most Shopify merchants know carts get abandoned. Few know the monthly dollar amount. This article shows you how to calculate it — with real examples at different revenue levels.
The abandoned cart revenue formula
Monthly cart abandonment loss ≈ Monthly store revenue × (Abandonment rate ÷ (1 − Abandonment rate)) × Recoverable share. With a 70% abandonment rate, you're losing roughly 2.3× your monthly revenue in abandoned cart value.
Not all of that is recoverable — but 10–15% is, with a proper email sequence. That's the number that matters for ROI calculations.
Examples by store size
Using 70% abandonment and 12% recovery rate:
- $50K/mo store: ~$115K in abandoned cart value, ~$13.8K recoverable annually
- $100K/mo store: ~$230K abandoned value, ~$27.6K recoverable annually
- $250K/mo store: ~$575K abandoned value, ~$69K recoverable annually
